This article analyzes the spiritual novel Saint Manuel Bueno, Martyr by the Spanish author Miguel de Unamuno, exploring references from religion, philosophy and literature, and representing the work as a manual of the life of Manuel. In accordance with the theory of paratext, the piece analyzes five paratextual indicators: the name of the author, the title of the book, genre, parabola and heresy.
The novel is also perceived as a thematic and formal invention, displaying religious aspects that led to its being included in the list of proscribed works.
