In this article, Eshelman analyses Ali Smith’s novel Hotel World and Olga Tokarzcuk’s story Hotel Capital, both as a performatist works, commenting on the setting and technique of the narrative. His hypotheses are grounded in the semiotics of literary text and the ideas of such noted scholars as Mircea Eliade and Peter Sloterdijk.
Eshelman deconstructs the hotel setting to read its triple function: protective, sacral and aesthetic. Examining the ideas that emerge from the stories, he also identifies the differences between post-modernism and performatism.
Key words: space, sphere, simulation, sacral, performance, monism
