Sherif Luzha

This piece addresses the post-modernist poetic of Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse 5, analysing the parodic discourse, the protagonist’s personal philosophy and the role of irony as the narrative’s dominant figure. Considered one of the greatest anti-war novels, Slaughterhouse 5 is interpreted here as historiographic meta-fiction, in which the novelist’s humanist intent is interwoven with the fatalistic spirit of the character. Additionally, the irony is analysed on two levels, that of language and that of situation.

Keywords: postmodernism, metafiction, irony, parody, intertextual, demystification
